Osaka Amazing Pass: All 39 Free Sites, Their Real Prices, and When It Loses Money

1. Who should buy this pass and who should skip it

Buy it if you plan to enter three or more paid attractions in a day. Skip it if your day is Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi and eating. The 1-day pass is ¥3,500 and the 39 free sites average ¥1,150 each, so the maths is about as simple as it gets.

Clearing the price is the easy part. The hard part is getting those attractions to line up on the same day, in the same district, with their doors open. Ten sites close on Mondays and four of the boat rides are locked to a season or a specific weekday.

2. Price, versions and how long the pass stays valid

The standard pass is ¥3,500 for one day and ¥5,000 for two. Those are the figures for the edition sold from 25 March 2026 to 31 March 2027. A new edition comes out every year, which is why a lot of pages still quote last year’s price.

Two 1-day passes cost ¥7,000, so the 2-day version saves ¥2,000. The two days have to be consecutive, and each attraction is once per pass rather than once per day.

Two separate deadlines apply

The Itami edition does not work at Kansai Airport

The name misleads people. The Itami edition covers Osaka International Airport, which handles domestic flights, and the official notes state plainly that it cannot be used at Kansai Airport.

Almost every international arrival lands at Kansai, so the standard pass is the default. The extra ¥300 buys the Osaka Monorail and Kita-Osaka Kyuko sections plus entry to Expo Commemoration Park and the Osaka Wheel, all of them north of the city.

3. What the pass covers on trains and buses

There is not a single JR line on this pass. The Osaka Loop Line, the Yumesaki Line out to Universal Studios and the Haruka to Kansai Airport are all separate fares. The pass is issued by Surutto KANSAI, an alliance of the private railways, and JR West has never been part of it.

Those five private railways are the real difference between this pass and a plain subway day ticket. Sakai Rishonomori and the Sakai City Museum sit on the Nankai line, so a subway pass cannot reach them at all.

Boarding from outside the zone

The official instruction is specific. Buy a ticket only as far as the boundary station, then show that ticket together with the pass to staff when you exit. You do not need a ticket covering the rest of the journey.

Some stations have no QR-capable gate, in which case you speak to staff rather than tapping through. The route map is dated April 2026 and the official wording is that anything not shown on it is not covered.

4. All 39 free sites and what they normally charge

The official line is “about 40 spots” and the standard pass actually lists 39. Together they come to ¥44,880, which averages ¥1,150. That average hides a lot, and the district tables below show why.

Kita, around Umeda: six sites

Minami, around Namba and Dotonbori: three sites

Three sites in the busiest tourist district in the city. That is the whole reason a Dotonbori day fails to clear the price. This is a neighbourhood where you eat and walk rather than pay admission.

Shinsekai and Tennoji: eight sites

Around Osaka Castle: ten sites

This district has the most entries, but four of them are boats tied to a season or a weekday. The Aqua Liner drops out during cherry blossom season while the Okawa cruise only runs during it, so the two effectively swap places.

The bay area, Tempozan and Nanko: seven sites

Elsewhere: five sites

5. The break-even number is ¥2,680, not ¥3,500

You do not have to earn the whole price back from attractions. You would be paying for the subway with or without the pass, so that portion is money you were going to spend anyway. What is left over is the real target.

Weekends are the worse case. The Enjoy Eco Card drops from ¥820 to ¥620 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, so the alternative gets cheaper and the bar you have to clear rises by ¥200.

Why the subway day card is the right baseline

Moving around the central districts keeps you inside zones 1 and 2, so four rides in a day come to between ¥760 and ¥960. The ¥820 Enjoy Eco Card sits right on that fourth ride, which is what makes it a fair thing to subtract. Ride less than that and you are deducting less, which pushes the break-even figure back up.

What that looks like in practice

Seven sites cost over ¥2,000 and 22 cost over ¥1,000. At the other end, 11 sites cost ¥500 or less. Two expensive entries settle it; four cheap ones do not get there.

Where the money is concentrated

The bay area holds the most value, but it sits at the end of the Chuo Line away from the centre, which makes it hard to combine with another district in one day. In its favour, Legoland, the Santa Maria, the Tempozan wheel and GLION are all within walking distance of Osakako Station.

6. How many sites you can actually fit into a day

The rules put no cap on how many attractions you visit in a day. In practice most people stop at three or four, because of duration, early last-admission times and the ticket exchanges the boats require.

Every boat needs exchanging. The official listing for the Tombori River Cruise says evening sailings sell out early and recommends swapping your ticket during the day. Miss that line and you turn up at dusk to a full boat.

Last admission comes earlier than you think

Museums and the zoo take their last entries between 16:00 and 16:30. What is left for the evening is Tsutenkaku, the Cosmo Tower, the HEP FIVE wheel and the Tempozan wheel. Build the day so the early closers come first and the viewing decks come last.

7. What the pass will not do

The two things most visitors to Osaka actually want, Universal Studios and the Kaiyukan aquarium, are both absent. Neither appears anywhere in the 39 entries.

Captain Line appears in the list and confuses people. It is the ferry between Tempozan and the Universal Studios pier, and it has nothing to do with park admission.

The Kaiyukan switched to date-based pricing, so you check the official calendar for the rate on your day. As a single attraction it approaches the cost of the whole pass, which puts it out of range for inclusion.

8. The Osaka e-Pass plus a subway card works out cheaper

If all you need is admissions, the Osaka e-Pass combined with an Enjoy Eco Card undercuts the Amazing Pass. It saves ¥280 on a weekday and ¥480 at a weekend. Almost nobody runs this comparison, so here are both products side by side.

The two site lists are not the same

They overlap heavily but not completely, so which pass wins depends on where you are going.

The rule of thumb is short. If Osaka Castle keep is on your list, or you will board a private railway at any point, take the Amazing Pass. Otherwise the e-Pass and an Eco Card cost less.

9. The date you pick changes the answer

Spend your Monday in Osaka and ten of the 39 free sites are shut. The list leans heavily on municipal and public institutions, and those share a closing day.

Legoland runs on a published calendar

At ¥3,300 it is the most expensive entry on the list, and the days you can simply walk in with the pass are fixed in advance.

Seasonal and fixed-period entries

Anyone visiting in autumn should note that the housing museum is shut for over four months. It stays on the published list throughout, but you cannot get in.

10. Buying and using it: the parts that catch people out

You cannot pay cash and you cannot pay by debit card. The official conditions specify credit cards only and rule debit cards out by name. Anyone travelling on a debit card alone needs to sort that out before departure.

It stops working without a data connection

The pass runs on QR codes, which means three conditions apply: the phone has to be on, it has to be online, and camera access has to be granted, including inside your browser settings.

If your plan was to skip a SIM or eSIM and lean on hotel wi-fi, this pass will not cooperate. You need a connection at every ticket gate and every attraction entrance.

Activation timing matters

The official day runs from 03:00 to 02:59 the next morning, and you have to press activate after 03:00 on the day you intend to use it.

Refunds only exist before activation. Temporary closures, cancelled sailings and bad weather are all explicitly excluded, and once you have started using the pass nothing is recoverable.

Sort your payment methods first

11. When to leave it alone

If your first Osaka itinerary is Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi, Kuromon Market and Universal Studios, this pass is not for you. Not one of those four is covered.

Buying one for a child usually loses money

There is no child version, so a child needs the same ¥3,500 adult pass. Look at what the attractions actually charge children and the problem is obvious.

A child doing the castle, the zoo and the Tombori cruise, with a subway day card on top, comes to ¥1,010. Buying that child a ¥3,500 pass throws away more than ¥2,000. Adults take the pass, children pay per entry.

Day trips need their own tickets

The zone reaches the Osaka city area plus Sakai and the edge of Amagasaki. Kyoto and Nara sit outside it, so those days need separate tickets and your pass day should be one you spend inside the city.
